In a major step forward for clean fleet solutions for Canadian fleets, Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) and Cummins Inc. have announced that orders are now being accepted for the fifth-generation Freightliner Cascadia—now available with the new Cummins X15N natural gas engine.

Revealed this week at the ACT Expo in Anaheim, California, this development marks the first time a 15-litre natural gas engine is being introduced in a long-haul flagship truck in North America, offering exciting new possibilities for Canadian trucking companies seeking environmentally conscious and high-performance options.

Key Advantages of the Freightliner Cascadia with Cummins Natural Gas Power for Canadian Operators:

Starting in summer 2025, Canadian fleet operators can place orders for the Freightliner Cascadia 126" BBC, available in both sleeper and day cab configurations. The Cummins X15N engine is built on Cummins' innovative HELM™ platform, designed to accommodate various fuel types, including natural gas, diesel, and hydrogen. This multi-fuel capability provides Canadian fleets with the flexibility to choose the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly energy source for their operations across Canada's diverse geography.

Why This Matters for the Canadian Trucking Industry

As natural gas continues its growing prominence as a key alternative fuel within the Canadian freight sector, the Cummins X15N engine provides the power and torque demanded by long-haul trucking—plus a 10% fuel economy improvement over earlier Cummins natural gas models. It also achieves a certified 50 mg NOx rating, helping reduce environmental impact without trading off the reliability that Freightliner and Cummins are known for— a crucial factor for Canadian fleet operators who depend on their vehicles for performance and uptime.

"This engine opens the door to new and existing customers looking for a more sustainable trucking solution," stated Greg Treinen, Vice President of On-Highway Market Development at DTNA. "It's specifically engineered for demanding over-the-road performance while actively supporting lower emissions and a reduced total cost of ownership for Canadian businesses."

Made for the Realities of Canadian Trucking Demands

In addition to performance, this offering supports Canadian fleets where it counts:

  • Designed for heavy-duty and vocational use common in Canada.
  • Offers multiple fuel tank mounting options to suit diverse Canadian operational requirements.
  • Integrates with Cummins powertrain components for even greater emission reductions.

As Lyndon Jones of Cummins shared, "The X15N brings added power and efficiency, giving natural gas fleets even more reasons to grow their investments in clean fuel technologies."
